Solar Brings Long-Term Savings to Habitat Homes in Philadelphia

An anonymous donor recently helped bring solar power to five Habitat for Humanity homes in Philadelphia, creating meaningful long-term savings for the families who live there.

The homes are located in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, where several Habitat properties completed in 2024 were built with rooftop solar installed by Exact Solar. Together, the systems total 17.6 kW across five rooftops and use 400-watt modules paired with Enphase Energy microinverters. The homes are also ENERGY STAR certified, which reduces baseline energy use even before the solar systems begin delivering savings.

Long-Term Household Impact

Each home is expected to save more than $40,000 in electricity costs over the life of the system. For many homeowners, that level of savings would be a welcome benefit. For low-income families who participated in Habitat’s sweat equity program to build their homes, the impact is more significant.

Lower energy bills translate into more predictable monthly expenses and less exposure to rising electricity prices. Over time, that stability can free up income for other essentials such as food, education, and healthcare.

Energy Efficiency First

The ENERGY STAR certification of the homes plays an important role in the overall outcome. By lowering the base level of energy consumption through efficient building design, the solar systems can cover a larger share of the homes’ electricity needs. Efficiency and generation working together often produce the strongest financial benefits for homeowners.

Working Within Neighborhood Constraints

The project also had to meet strict historic district requirements. Strawberry Mansion is an established Philadelphia neighborhood where visual impacts from new installations are closely regulated. To comply with local zoning rules, installers painted and screened conduits and inverters so that the systems would blend with the existing architecture.

The solar installations moved forward without compromising neighborhood standards or the character of the community.

A Community Effort

One of the most notable aspects of the project is the involvement of the homeowners themselves. Habitat families contributed sweat equity hours during construction, helping build their own homes while professional solar crews completed the rooftop installations.

Projects like this highlight a different dimension of solar development. Much of the industry conversation focuses on gigawatts of capacity and national deployment forecasts. Those numbers matter, but the benefits of solar are also measured in smaller ways: stable energy bills, predictable household costs, and long-term financial resilience.
