Mexico has surpassed 5 GW of distributed solar, driven by hundreds of thousands of rooftop installations that are reshaping how electricity is generated across the country.
Mexico Surpasses 5 GW of Distributed Solar
Mexico has reached a major milestone in distributed solar.
According to the Comisión Nacional de Energía (CNE), distributed generation systems under 0.7 MW totaled 5,189.71 MW by the end of 2025 across more than 600,000 interconnected installations.
Almost all of that capacity comes from one technology.
Solar Now Dominates Distributed Generation
Of the total installed capacity, 5,164.98 MW comes from solar photovoltaic systems. All other technologies combined account for just 24.7 MW, meaning solar now represents roughly 99.5% of Mexico's distributed generation capacity in this market segment.
Small Systems Are Driving Big Growth
Most installations are relatively small.
Net-metered systems between 0 and 50 kW account for more than 583,000 installations and over 3.25 GW of capacity. Larger commercial systems between 50 kW and 500 kW exist, but they make up only a small share of total projects.
Rather than relying on a handful of large distributed facilities, Mexico has built this market through hundreds of thousands of installations on homes, businesses, and commercial properties.
Growth Has Been Remarkably Fast
The pace of expansion over the past eight years has been significant.
Between 2017 and 2025:
- ●Applications increased from 59,340 to more than 630,000.
- ●Installed capacity grew from 460.61 MW to more than 5.4 GW.
- ●Applications grew at a compound annual rate of 40.5%.
- ●Installed capacity increased by about 41% annually.
Nearly One Gigawatt Added in One Year
In 2025 alone, distributed solar capacity increased from roughly 4.18 GW to 5.16 GW, adding nearly 1 GW in a single year.
That level of annual growth shows continued demand for customer-owned solar across residential and commercial markets.
Adoption Is Widespread
Distributed solar is expanding across nearly every region of the country.
Some states are leading the way:
- ●Jalisco: 99,949 installations and 747.67 MW
- ●Nuevo León: 69,846 installations and 543.91 MW
- ●Chihuahua: 50,443 installations and 392.68 MW
Across all Mexican states, the average distributed generation capacity is about 162 MW, while the average installation size nationwide is 8.64 kW.
What This Means
Mexico's distributed solar market is no longer a niche segment of the electricity system.
Its growth has been driven by hundreds of thousands of individual investment decisions rather than a small number of large projects. As more households and businesses generate their own electricity, distributed solar is becoming an increasingly important source of new generating capacity and a larger part of how Mexico continues to expand and diversify its power system.
